how it started

It all started with a notebook. I needed a new notebook for my new idea. My first thought was to make a point and just get any old notebook that wasn’t going to make a dent in my bank account. But then I saw this one…

Something about the embroidery on the front reflected my current feelings of summer and life in general. The desire for creativity, for work, for community, for good food, for… joy.

I don’t want to call this a joy journey, but I think it is in many ways. It’s letting go of influences and expectations and burying myself in this beautiful season that I more often that not find myself trying to escape. I don’t actually want to escape this season. I want to let go of the losses and negative opinions and … the outside noise.

I want to find my hygge.

Denmark.dk defines hygge as, “taking time away from the daily rush to be together with people you care about- or even by yourself- to relax and enjoy life’s quieter pleasures.” This seems so basic and cozy, and yet I think it’s harder for us than we give true thought to. Or easier?

I think hygge is made of the moments we don’t necessarily think about. It’s the family dinners and board games, pajama walks and backyard movies. But the hygge I am searching for is a little more intentional… in the sense that I want it to be secondhand nature but treasured, not dismissed.

I want friends to come over and have it not feel like a show, but just a sharing of our space and life. For staying up late for firefly catching to feel like a spark of joy and not disruption to the schedule.

I am more than aware we can’t pause life- extracurriculars and work and obligations. However, we can reframe how we look at it all. And that’s what I’m trying to do.

I’m trying to reframe my thinking to find lasting joy and hygge.
